About the position
The Staff Accountant will prepare and maintain financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. This role will support the accounting and bookkeeping needs of a US-based 501c3 (LSM’s main entity) with international operations (70+ LSM staff based in nearly 20 countries). This position will report directly to the Director of Finance. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization.
  • Prepares monthly balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
  • Maintains the general ledger.
  • Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
  • Performs monthly bank reconciliations, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verifies and/or completes payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.
  • Responds to team leaders’ questions regarding financial issues
  • Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.
  • Files tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
  • Coordinates with software vendors to maintain accounting software systems; recommends updates to enhance the accounting software.
  • Manages the purchasing and invoicing system.
  • Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Characteristics
  • A history of at least two years serving in finance for either a for-profit or a non-profit organization with at least 25 staff members is required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.
  • Understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Proficient with Google Suite or Office Suite and online Quickbooks

Ideal Skills
  • Able to work across currencies
  • Proficient with accounting software such as Bill.com and Ramp
  • Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or related field, required.
  • At least three years of related experience is required.
 
Languages: Fluency in English is required and proficiency in other languages (especially Spanish and/or Italian) is desirable.

Location: United States or Ecuador

Hours: 40 hours per week

Work environment: Remote
